The Great White Rant, Revisited

Just as Donald Trump regularly dehumanizes dark-skinned people, incurring the requisite (and much-desired) outrage from all who claim to be decent, so too is he uncannily proficient at then turning the tables upon the decently outraged. In typical gaslighting fashion, Trump is calling the outraged media and citizens to account for their coverage of and reaction to his latest "animals" remark aimed at undocumented immigrants. He lambasted the outraged, saying that if they'd been paying close enough attention to his well-known nuanced verbal skills, they would have noticed he was aga... more »

How Taiwan Would Defend Itself from a Decapitation Strike (By China)

Robert Beckhusen at The National Interest - 14 hours ago
*Robert Beckhusen* *Security, * Is Taipei prepared for the unthinkable? In military terms, a “decapitation” strike refers to the practice of targeting a country’s top leadership in the opening hours of a war — cutting off the head of an enemy army and its political system. Taiwan, situated close to China with its many ways of carrying out such an attack, is vulnerable. Remote though it may seem, Taiwan takes the possibility seriously enough to treat defending against decapitation to be among its top military priorities under its “resolute defense” doctrine. Justin Trudeau vs respect for the truth

Justin Trudeau recently gave a commencement speech at the New York University (NYU). Anthony Watts unsurprisingly emphasized Trudeau's comments around 24:10 in the full video above where the Canadian prime minister mentions two apparently equivalent things that can't be defended – female genital mutilation and climate skepticism (which is of course described by the verb "deny"). But I found a much larger portion of the speech sort of shocking. The Canadian prime minister may be an extreme example but he is not *too* extreme. Could the B-1 Bomber Be Turned Into a Gunship?

Customer Heaping Racist Abuse On Employees? Employer Must Stop It Or Risk Suit

Donna Ballman at Screw You Guys, I'm Going Home - 17 hours ago
The video of the guy heaping abuse on a restaurant's employees for speaking Spanish that went viral made me wonder: what did the restaurant do after this? A company's duty to keep the workplace free of national origin and immigration status harassment extends to protecting its employees from customer abuse and discrimination. The most common case comes when a customer demands the company engage in discrimination by not assigning people of a particular race or national origin to them. An example would be a hospital patient refusing to be treated by people of a particular race. But w... more »
