Latvia Is Warning That Russia Is Trying To Promote Regime Change In Its Government

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 12 hours ago
Latvian parliament (Source: acreurope.eu) *Paul Goble, Eurasia Daily Monitor*: *Kremlin Covertly Promoting Regime Change in Latvia, Riga Security Official Warns* Thanks to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as well as its own efforts, Latvia almost certainly is protected against a Russian military threat of the kind some in Moscow constantly threaten the Baltic States with. Indeed, a new Estonian government report specifically concludes that a Russian military threat to the Baltic countries is relatively low (Valisluureamet.ee, February 2018). And yet, Latvia—to an even ... more »

Thoughts on the Florida school shooting

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 13 hours ago
I've waited a couple of days to say anything about the tragic high school shooting in Florida. As usual, the media and self-appointed "experts" were all over the situation, exploiting it for their various purposes and agendas. Few, if any, worried about what the families who've lost loved ones might think, or how they might react. As in previous such tragedies, the media are dancing in the blood of the victims. I've written about such situations in the past, particularly here and here. My arguments then remain valid today, so I won't repeat them. I simply point out that *gun c... more »

Security In Iraq, Feb 8-14, 2018

Security has remained steady in Iraq since the start of the new year. Nearly every week there has been around 60 incidents. That was slightly above the rate seen at the end of 2017. The main cause of the increase was an uptick in attacks in Baghdad, followed by occasional outbursts in Diyala, Kirkuk, Ninewa and Salahaddin. There were 65 incidents in the 2nd week of February 2018. That was the fifth straight full week with 60 incidents. That was spread across Anbar (3), Salahaddin (9), Kirkuk (10), Ninewa (10), Diyala (12), and Baghdad (21). Those led to 63 deaths and 93 wounded. ... more »

BWorld 185, Lower taxes via more mineral exports

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 1 day ago
* This is my article in BusinessWorld last February 6, 2018. Countries that impose zero income taxes on their nationals are dependent on extracting and exporting their natural resources such as oil and natural gas. Qatar, Bahrain, Brunei, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates are examples of such countries. Instead of minimizing the extraction of these fossil fuels (and keeping them in the ground, as advocated by environmentalist groups), these countries extract these resources big time, export them to the rest of the world, and sustain their governments’ economic an... more »

Still Flipping Out Over The Generic Congressional Polls? Don't

For those still nervous about generic congressional polls showing less strength among generic Democrats than it was a few weeks ago I want to offer two graphics. Above is one showing how Democrat Margaret Good fared on Tuesday against the son of Republican Congressman Vern Buchanan in a Trump district in southwest Florida. It's great than Margaret won but what's even more important is that there was a 12 point swing away from the Republicans and towards the Democrats in a state legislative race with record-breaking turnout. Remember, Republicans have 12,060 more registered voters ... more »
