Compliments of Karl Denninger over at Market Ticker we have *The 'Harass Your Sexatary Act Of 1995' .* I go through periods of not reading The Market Ticker because Karl, while obviously a very bright man, has a habit of calling his readers stupid. LACKING REAL THINGS TO BLAME ON THE CLINTONS, MAUREEN DOWD BLAMES THEM COUNTERFACTUALLY

Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog - 13 hours ago
There are no Clintons holding public office now, and it's unlikely there will be any in the future unless Chelsea or one of her kids decides to run. So there's not much going on in America that Maureen Dowd can blame on Bill or Hillary. In desperation, she declares that while predatory behavior directed against women is a big news story right now, it wouldn't have been if Hillary had been elected president. Therefore, we can blame Hillary and Bill counterfactually for the continued suppression of this story that didn't actually happen. Dowd writes: Would the war against preying on... more »

Entertaining Satan: Why We Tolerate Terrorist Incitement

Andrew Koppelman at Balkinization - 16 hours ago
Recently proposed restrictions of terrorist incitement, beyond what is already unprotected, are unworkable. The law cannot reach internet speech that originates overseas, and restrictions on reading such material cannot give readers adequate notice of what is banned. There is also value in permitting readers to expose themselves even to evil and destructive views. When people are treated as adults, they may make bad choices, but free people have to be permitted to contemplate such choices. What Would Japan Do if They Discovered North Korea Was About to Start a Nuclear War?

*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, Asia* This is the question that keeps Tokyo up at night. *While a preemptive-strike capability for Japan isn’t impossible, it is more difficult than many observers realize. The 7 Best Military Commanders Of All Time (According To Napoleon Bonaparte)

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 21 hours ago
Wiki Commons *Business Insider: **The 7 best military commanders of all time, according to Napoleon Bonaparte* Napoleon Bonaparte is one of the greatest military commanders of all time. He brought Revolutionary France back from the brink of destruction with his Italian campaign in 1796 and 1797. He made a fool of Czar Alexander I at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. He encircled an entire Austrian army and forced them to capitulate at the Battle of Ulm in 1805. And these are just a few of his exploits. *"Nine Meals from Anarchy"* by Jeff Thomas In 1906, Alfred Henry Lewis stated, “There are only nine meals between mankind and anarchy.” Since then, his observation has been echoed by people as disparate as Robert Heinlein and Leon Trotsky. The key here is that, unlike all other commodities, food is the one essential that cannot be postponed. If there were a shortage of, say, shoes, we could make do for months or even years. A shortage of gasoline would be worse, but we could survive it, through mass transport or even walking, if necessary. But food is different. If there were an in... more »

Courtesy of Think Progress: *During Friday’s White House Press Briefing, Sarah Huckabee Sanders fielded questions about President Trump’s Thursday night tweets calling for an investigation of Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) in response to accusations of sexual assault. Sanders rejected any suggestion that Trump should likewise be investigated for any of the accusations made against him. * *“This was covered extensively during the campaign,” she said. “We addressed it then. The American people spoke very loud and clear when they elected this president.” * *When asked to clarify how Trump a... more »

Paulo Coelho, “Change and Renewal”

*“Change and Renewal”* by Paulo Coelho “When winter arrives, the trees must sigh in sadness as they see their leaves falling. They say: ‘We will never be like we were before.’ Of course. Or still, what is the meaning of renewing oneself? The next leaves will have their own nature, they pertain to a new summer that approaches and which will never be like the one that passed. Living means changing– and the seasons repeat these lessons to us every year. Changing means going through a period of depression: we still don’t know the new and we have to forget everything we used to know. Bu... more »

The Poet: David Wagoner, "Getting There"

* "Getting There"* "You take a final step and, look, suddenly You're there. You've arrived At the one place all your drudgery was aimed for: This common ground Where you stretch out, pressing your cheek to sandstone. What did you want to be? You'll remember soon. You feel like tinder under a burning glass, A luminous point of change. The sky is pulsing against the cracked horizon, Holding it firm till the arrival of stars In time with your heartbeats. Like wind etching rock, you've made a lasting impression On the self you were, By having come all this way through all this welter Unde... more »

48 badly dehydrated and starving puppies rescued from the local dump

White Wolf at White Wolf - 1 day ago
Animal Rescue said many of the puppies were emaciated and badly dehydrated, “struggling to survive by scavenging for food and shelter at the local dump. ”We got a call from a lady way up north, about a 10-hour drive, from High Level,” AARCS executive director Deanna Thompson told Global News on Friday. “She works in the community up there and just said that a large number of unspayed female dogs that had littered recently were in need of homes. “So we sent a crew up there and were pretty flabbergasted to find as many animals as we did. We were able to bring in 48.” The rescue was... more »

Tax Deductions For Earthquakes Are Erased From The Tax Code-- But Not Tax Deductions For Hurricanes (Or Private Jets)

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
I don't have a private jet; never did. But... I sort of did. I was the president of a division of TimeWarner and the company had private jets. All I had to do was call and say I need a jet and I could fly anywhere I wanted. You knowhow many time I did that? Zero, never once. That's because it's incredibly expensive and a horrifying waste of money that could have been spent on helping break out artists (for example). But a few times I was going to New York or L.A. and someone would invite me along for a ride on *their* jet. Very convenient and comfortable, etc. But I was never temp... more »

Dog 'dies of a broken heart' after being dumped at airport by her owner

White Wolf at White Wolf - 1 day ago
A loyal dog is said to have died from a broken heart after she was abandoned at an airport by her owner. The distressed pet - named 'Travelling Cloud' by veterinarians who cared for her - wandered around for a month before finally being rescued by an animal shelter, but by then it was too late. After being dumped at the airport, the dog spent days walking through the terminal apparently looking for her owner, who was believed to have left on a flight. Witnesses say the animal eventually stopped looking and spent its last days at the airport laying in a corner of the terminal. Pas... more »

Leadership 2018 Links

Greg Fingas at Accidental Deliberations - 1 day ago
The latest from the Saskatchewan NDP's leadership campaign - though it's noteworthy at the outset how little of the activity in the race is taking place in the public eye. (One key exception there is the policy front, where both candidates have been very active - and which I'll address in future posts.) - I haven't focused much on endorsements so far due to the reality that both Ryan Meili and Trent Wotherspoon figured to have ample support behind them. And I'll note that the start of the campaign has confirmed that expectation - with Meili unveiling endorsements from Cathy Sproule,... more »
