Assorted content for your long weekend reading. - Cole Stangler interviews Raquel Garrido about the political critique behind Jean-Luc Melenchon's emerging presidential campaign - and it sounds equally applicable in Canada: One of the reasons why the current regime is lacking consent in French society is because the process for electing officials allows them to behave inconsistently with their campaign promises. The main cultural characteristic of the current political class is impunity. They do whatever they want because they are absolutely unaccountable. That culture of impunity ...more »

It could have been confidently predicted that Kelvin MacKenzie's suspension from *The Sun *would be made one of the BBC's top news stories. It's currently the 2nd-ranked story on the BBC News website. (ITV, in contrast, has it has its 10th-ranked story). The BBC's report is striking for its weighting against Mr MacKenzie. His response to the criticism gets just 29 words, only 2 of which are direct quotes. His critic, the Mayor of Liverpool, in contrast, is given 262, of which 91 are direct quotes. (ITV's article is much more carefully balanced). Another of the *Sun*'s media riva...more »
The appalling murder of Hannah Bladon by a Palestinian in Jerusalem remains as one of the top stories on the Sky News and ITV News websites (in 7th and 3rd place respectively). It is, however, nowhere to be found now among the (13) top news stories featured on the BBC News website, nor is it on the BBC's World page. The story has been relegated to the BBC's Middle East page. The other remarkable thing about the BBC's coverage is that, again unlike ITV or Sky, the BBC website has chosen not to publish a photograph of Ms Bladon. *Update (10.00): *The BBC has now re-instated the s...more »

*-by Prateek Dwivedi* The legalization of medical marijuana in Canada, jurisdictions within the U.S., and abroad has returned a once-taboo, illegal recreational product back to its role as a medicinal agent, which can be traced back to ancient China. While the current market is generally delineated as “Recreational” or “Medicinal” users, in many jurisdictions and use cases, medical cannabis is an access point for the recreational user. In Canada, where cannabis is legal on a nationwide basis, only 5% of clinicians prescribe its use for patients. Among the factors that would give ...more »
