Sweat Shops, GMOs And Neoliberal Fundamentalism: The Agroecological Alternative To Global Capitalism

Colin Todhunter at EAST BY NORTHWEST - 29 seconds ago
Global Research, Countercurrents, CounterPunch, RINF Much of the argument in favour of GM agriculture involves little more than misrepresentations and unscrupulous attacks on those who express concerns about the technology and its impacts. These attacks are in part designed to whip up populist sentiment and denigrate critics so that corporate interests can secure further control over agriculture. They also serve to divert attention from the underlying issues pertaining to hunger and poverty and genuine solutions, as well as the self-interest of the pro-GMO lobby itself. Is A Nuclear Armed Taiwan China's Greatest Nightmare?

Taking a dip at Nanwan beach, with Taiwan's Tai Power No. 3 nuclear power station looming above. Photo: Reuters *Kyle Mizokami, National Interest:** China's Greatest Nightmare: Taiwan Armed with Nuclear Weapons* It would have been one of the greatest crises of postwar Asia: the revelation of a Taiwanese atomic bomb. For Taiwan, the bomb would have evened the odds against a numerically superior foe. For China, a bomb would have been casus belli, justification for an attack on the island country it considered a rogue province. Active from the 1960s to the 1980s, Taipei’s efforts to ... more »

Americans and Mexicans living at the border are more connected than divided

In 2002, I began traveling the entire length of the U.S.-Mexico border on both sides. From Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, the border measures almost 2,000 miles. What distinguished my journey was that I began traveling well before the idea of fortifying the U.S.-Mexico border entered public consciousness. Inadvertently, I became witness to the wall’s construction and its impact on the lives of border dwellers, which I reported in my book, “Why Walls Won’t Work.” Shortly after 9/11, as I explain in the the book, the U.S. built 650 miles of walls and fences along of the 700-m... more »

How our morals might politically polarize just about anything

DonkeyHotey/flickr, CC BY-SA When news breaks about wrongdoings of our favorite politician, the other side inevitably argues that we have a scandal on our hands. We like to think that our superior grasp of logic is what enables us to reason through and reject the other side’s concerns. But, a series of three studies I recently published suggest such decisions are not just the result of reasoning. Rather, feeling moral aversion toward political opponents compels us toward positions that help our team “win.” This is true even if it means adopting positions with which we’d otherwise ... more »

Indeed, I suspect this treatment of the dying will simply become a part of its long campaign to privatize health care. If the irving press did give a damn, it would have run the two stories below. Paying people to retire is neither moral nor just – nor sustainable. Like most things in politics, superannuation started and has been sustained with lies. I hadn't been back in America very long-- having been living abroad for nearly 7 years-- when I ran into someone I had met years before when I booked a Doors concert at my school. It was Danny Fields, who had gone from being an A&R man at the Doors' label, Elektra, to working as a journalist and managing a new band. He wanted me to see the new band. I didn't want to. He insisted and insisted until I agreed. I went down to the Bowery to a skeetzy club I had never heard of, CBGB's and saw a brand new band that hadn't recorded yet-- the Ramones. It charged my life, quite literally and... more »

Meet the Next Tory Leader

Let's leave behind the argy-bargy and specumalations surrounding Jeremy Corbyn and his leadership, and turn our attention to the Conservatives and who will succeed Theresa May. It's not exciting anyone at the moment because the issue is beyond settled. May convincingly took the farce of the Tory party leadership contest and now rides high in the polls. And yet, as everyone obsesses about Labour's difficulties we have a tendency to forget that May possesses a sliver of a majority, and adding Copeland to her tally does nothing to change that. The wealthy still call the shots. If you doubt that assertion, consider recent revelations about Fintrac. Alan Freeman writes: Time and again, Fintrac and the Canadian government have been called out by the Financial Action Task Force, an intergovernmental group that develops international standards in the fight against money laundering, for weak laws and half-hearted enforcement. Instead of being a leader, Canada has earned a reputation as a laggard in this battle. This lukewarm commitment by Ottawa to policing money-laundering wasn’t helped by a Supreme Court of Canada ruling in... more »

Saudi Arabia's Southeast Asia Terror Tour

Land Destroyer at Land Destroyer - 19 hours ago
*March 5, 2017* (Tony Cartalucci - NEO) - Saudi Arabia's king, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, has recently undertaken a sweeping tour of Southeast Asia in what the media and analysts are claiming is a bid to firm up economic and political ties with Muslim-majority nations in the region. However, both the media and analysts are sidestepping or entirely omitting the role Saudi Arabia has played in fueling global terrorism, extraterritorial geopolitical meddling, and even divisive and terroristic activities the notorious state sponsor of terrorism has been implicated in across the plan... more »

There's nothing like a BBC-on-BBC discussion to brighten up your Sunday morning, and this morning's *Andrew Marr Show *featured Jon Sopel and Andrew Marr (plus ex-BBC Stephanie Flanders) chatting amongst themselves (again) about the man of the moment. Opinions poured forth.... *ANDREW MARR*: Now Jon, let's talk about President Trump and those tweets. What a story! *JON SOPEL*: Extraordinary. It's hard to describe what it is like living in the US at the moment, where you wake up and you think, "I wonder what he's said now". Yesterday was an absolute classic. High explains, “The level of complexity of humans has increased, and that was the factor that the Deep State did not take into account. They kept their ridged mindset, their ridged rules, their compartmentalization and kept everything so boxed in even they were unaware that humanity has evolved out and around their obstruction. "The Vulnerability, The Changes, The Flaws..."

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 19 hours ago
“We don't have to hate ourselves for our own vulnerability. We don't have to hate ourselves for what life has done to us. We don't have to hate ourselves because hurt or loss or longing has gotten to us. Our desires will always be with us in some form, keeping us firmly attached to a world that will hurt us. We must come to love ourselves, love our life, in its vulnerability, in its impermanence, not in spite of all its flaws, but because of them. Because the vulnerability, the changes, the flaws make us who we are.” - Barry Magid

Andrew Marr: Snapshot (2)

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 19 hours ago
Also on the *Andrew Marr* show today, Mr Marr risked a little personal dig at President Trump's appearance: Now to the papers. As I promised, lots and lots of Trump. "Trump accuses Obama of a new Watergate plot", says the *Sunday Telegraph*. They've also got the story about training that you were hearing about in the news there. 'T levels' the Chancellor wants to talk about rather than 'A levels'. And there's the *Sunday Times* again - *a rather unsettling, unpleasant picture of Donald Trump with his tie blowing up against his **comb-over*. And then, "Chancellor's £60 billion Brexi... more »

Andrew Marr: Snapshot (1)

This morning's *Andrew Marr *show began with a flourish from the man himself. After implying that Trump's claims about Obama and the *Mail on Sunday*'s claims about Blair are "fake", he described UKIP's second place in Stoke as a "drubbing" and then engaged in a little joke with Jon Sopel about him presently "having a mini-break from irritating President Trump". Morning. And what a morning it is for news. Trump savages Obama for tapping his phone - *though, so far, not **a shred of evidence*. And who's Trump's new Middle East envoy? The world is ageing. A demographic shift is underway. According to some figures (Suzman et al 2015), the proportion of the worldwide population aged 65 or older will outnumber the proportion aged under 5 by the year 2020. And the shift is faster is some countries. Japan is a striking example. Demographers refer to it as a ‘super-ageing’ society. By 2030, they estimate that one in three Japanese people will be aged 65 or over. One in five will be over 75.
