CounterPunch, Global Research, Countercurrents, RINF British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has suggested the UK could join US military action against the Syrian government without parliamentary approval. Johnson said he and PM Theresa May agreed that in the event of another chemical attack by the Assad regime, it would be hard for the UK to refuse any request to join military action. No evidence has been provided that the Syrian government was responsible for the recent attack. If anything, as with the previous alleged chemical weapons attack in 2013, available evidence and logic w...more »

Since the inception of the field of artificial intelligence, a prominent goal has been to create computer systems that would reason as capably as humans across a wide range of fields. Over the last decade, this goal has been brought closer to reality. Machine learning systems have come to excel in many signal processing tasks and have achieved superhuman performance in learning tasks including the games of Go and Heads-up Poker. More broadly, we have seen large changes in every pore of our society. This remarkable progress raises the question of how the world may look if the field ...more »
Having recently participated in the worldwide March for Science, I can only repeat my assertion that the “War on Science” is about a lot more than nerds and EPA grants. One napkin was shown to Ronald Reagan who, foreshadowing Trump, was too thick to understand it. *Here's a wee piece I did for work. Readers will be familiar with some of the points made below, but there are a couple of new ones made here too.* The general election has been called and Britain is in for another six weeks of politicking before polling stations open on 8th June. When Theresa May made public her intentions, it did catch all the experts and pundits on the hop – me included. Yet when you sit back and think about it, you have to ask why no one saw it coming. The Conservatives have a slender majority, making the Prime Minister vulnerable to backbench rebellions. There ...more »
This is a superb description of the Giant Sloth in action. We actually nail it here. Please note the skill used in hurling itself through the trees. Those slips are quite deliberate and no falls are seen. Even better we have a social group numbering a dozen of them. They are even showing us curiosity. Obviously these are the females and their cubs. Add in the normal creation of caches demanding later return and we have a mobile harem following up on kills. Again they are quite used to swinging through trees for most travel. A whole bunch of what i expected showed up here....more »
As i have now posted many times, our agricultural future will be organic. The sooner the better of course but inevitably over the next forty years. Only much faster if government chooses to drop support payments for all non organic systems. We are living through the nadir of industrial agriculture and it is slowly running out of viable options. A major ban in Europe has seen a huge bee recovery. In general most policy makers worldwide are now wise to the problems and are acting far more cautiously or at least demanding larger bribes. What is missing in this discussion is an appreciation that all animals with the exception of humanity rely on mind to mind communication in the first place. Because we do not, we naturally discount the ability of others. Yet those others use this talent extensively including against prey that then think they are not there. In fact our own inability to observe game can be traced back to this phenomena. A herd of deer could graze nearby in the midst of hunting season with this trick and probably do in order to protect themselves. The methods described here can be used to res...more »
