Keeping it Simple: D6 and BRP

Daniel Stack at 19th Level - 1 hour ago
I don't blog a whole lot about systems but when going over some older games and adventures I've picked up lately I came to the realization I seem to have a lot more luck in games that have a certain level of simplicity to their rules - especially the D6 System and BRP-based games. I always get a kick out of the fact that the Chaosium team that wrote West End Games' *Ghostbusters RPG *is made up of people who had major roles in developing *RuneQuest, Call of Cthulhu*, and *Pendragon*, all three of which are BRP-based games. While the two systems are fairly different from each other... more »

Movie Watch: 80 Years Ago Today, Fascists Murdered Spain's Greatest Poet, Federico García Lorca

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 hour ago
In 1936, democratic Spain was overrun by right wing extremists of the Trump variety who soon went on a murderous rampage against, among others, gays. The greatest poet in Spanish history, Federico García Lorca, was arrested by the fascists and executed on August 19, 1936-- 80 years ago today-- making the whole world a poorer place. (His work was banned in his native country by the right-wing government, our allies, until 1953.) Released in 2008 in the U.K. and in 2010 in the U.S., *Little Ashes* is a film, set in the 1920s and '30s, about the friendship between Luis Buñuel, Salva... more »

#RPGaDay 2016 Day 19: Best Way to Learn a New Game

Daniel Stack at 19th Level - 2 hours ago
Obviously playing is the best way, preferably with someone who has some familiarity. That said, I'd have to say that there's definitely an advantage to actually reading the rules, even if in a condensed or simplified form. When an entire group is learning a new game I also find it helpful to slowly role out rules where possible.

As you busily set about conquering the world militarily or, depending on your play style, kindness, you get to sign treaties with computer-controlled opponents. It being a title from 2001, the options are a touch limited. You can put together a peace treaty if you’re concluding a war, sign a right of passage agreement, or a mutual protection pact. Signing the latter has you declaring war on anyone who attacks your ally, so it’s not something to enter into lightly. Should you break any of the treaties your ... more »

I'm beginning this on Thursday evening because I have been watching news on a variety of channels. All of them carried the story of a little boy in Aleppo who had been wounded by a bomb. There are some obvious problems with this. 1. The boys' rescuers immediately carried him to a brightly lit room, and placed him in a very dramatic-looking chair. 2. There were at least two cameramen there to film him. Now, if you found a boy injured by a bomb, would your first instinct be to put him in dramatic chair with bright lights and two cameramen? 3. The story told us that the camermen were ... more »

What is new here is the linkage between the crustal shift and ENKI. My own work detailing the shift that i named the Pleistocene Nonconformity of 12900 BP came out on this Blog in july of 2007. The original conjecture came out under Hapwood back in the fifties and has been worked on be others since. I policed up the geometry and the slip plane that makes it possible. Alternatively a hollow Earth make things a lot easier. That a great power was involved became obvious. Now for some reason this piece has named ENKI although the story line has not appeared elsewhere for myself... more »

Ouch!!! Turns out that the whole anti depressant protocol is no better than a placebo and also produces harm that is deliberately obscured. It is my present conjecture that most depression is brought about by a lack of social engagement. Certainly the onset of social engagement usually ameliorates the effect. Thus a chronic lack of social engagement likely leads to a build op of toxins of some form. *Conjecture:* Behavior therapy should be explored for all brain related issues including and especially including depression. Where physical damage is indicated, such therapy wi... more »

11 Natural Tricks for Insomnia

Debra Hawkins at Housewife Eclectic - 1 day ago
Today’s post is sponsored by Natrol, but my love for their melatonin is all my own! I am not a great sleeper. As a total night owl, sometimes I struggle to fall asleep until 3 or 4 in the morning every night, which ends up messing up the next day too. People are always suggesting sleeping pills to me, but I feel but better using natural ways to get to sleep. These are my favorite. *Meditation*- Meditation has been shown to improve sleep cycles when used right before bed. Focusing on the positive and deep breathing can help clear your mind for rest. *Notebook*- Often times peop... more »

#RPGaDay Day 18: Best Innovation RPG Groups Could Benefit From

Daniel Stack at 19th Level - 1 day ago
While there's a number of technical innovations possible, one innovation in the legal space I'd like to see is a revision of copyright law. Currently US copyright law appears to be based around the proposition that "Steamboat Willie" can never enter the public domain. Though it'll never happen, I'd love to see a major reduction in copyright law. Once upon a time the term of a copyright maxed out at 28 years. If that were the case today, any RPG written prior to 1988 would be in the public domain. This wouldn't stop Wizards of the Coast from having a copyright to new incarnations ... more »

Canadians Demand Action to Get the Gore Out of Our Faces

Abortion is a legal, common, safe -- and except in the tiny minds of a tiny minority -- ordinary medial procedure. For the tiny minds, however, it is "killing" and they want it stopped. To that end, some groups -- most notably the Fetal Gore Porn Gang, aka Canadian Centre for Bioethical Reform -- will go to any lengths, including endangering drivers, scaring children, and disgusting just about everyone with their antics. Some towns and cities have stood up to the gore-meisters. Others have caved, in fear of being taken to court over "free speech." Well, Canadians are sick of the g... more »
