Will Falling Oil Prices Severely Impact Russia

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 2 minutes ago
*Why Russia’s Unfazed By Falling Oil Prices -- Zero Hedge* *Oil is not quite as powerful a weapon against modern-day Russia as one might think.* By arguing that the slump in oil prices will finish off Russia just like it did the Soviet Union, Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, writing in the Daily Telegraph, is forgetting how far Russia has come since those dark days. It is true that the USSR couldn’t cope with falling oil revenues and that Saudi Arabia is credited with helping to break up the former empire by dramatically increasing oil production from 2 million to 10 million barrels per ... more »

Will OPEC Win The Oil War?

*Oil Wars: Why OPEC Will Win -- Roger Andrews, Oil Price* In the green corner we have the US shale producers. In the red corner we have the oil exporting countries of OPEC. Assuming the fight is fought to a conclusion, who wins? OPEC wins. The US shale producers will shut down first. The reasons are: • The US shale producers are motivated by economics, and all other things being equal will have an incentive to cut production at or around the point where production cost exceeds sales price. • The OPEC countries are motivated by social imperatives. They have historically used their... more »

Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA. Thanks for stopping by.

Our government has decided that the too-big-to-jail banks are also too big the bail OUT. Therefore, it is a given that the next banks to crash will refinance themselves by bailing IN, which means conficating their depositors' money. Theoretically, we are all protected by deposit insurance up to $250,000, but the FDIC doesn't have enough to remburse one bank's loss, much less if they all collapse at once. Moral: If you have money deposited in one of the big banks, get out PRONTO and put it in a credit union.

*by Gaius Publius* I've been writing about the "billionaire class" lately, trying to characterize them, give them names, faces and wealth numbers. For example, we know that the Top 20% owns 85% of American wealth, as of 2009. We also know that income distribution, which isn't quite the same as wealth distribution, is also very skewed. For example, this is from 2011 data (slightly rounded): - Average income of Top 0.01% — *$23,800,000* per year - Average income of the rest of the Top 0.1% — $2,800,000 - Average income of the rest of the Top 1% — $1,020,000 - Average income... more »

Searches of cell phones on arrest; some might suggest a warrant was appropriate

R. *v. *Fearon, 2014 SCC 77: Consequently, four conditions must be met in order for the search of a cell phone or similar device incidental to arrest to comply with s. 8 . First, the arrest must be lawful. Second, the search must be truly incidental to the arrest. This requirement should be strictly applied to permit searches that must be done promptly upon arrest in order to effectively serve the law enforcement purposes. In this context, those purposes are protecting the police, the accused or the public; preserving evidence; and, if the investigation will be stymied or significa... more »

Property Is Racist

hygiecrat at hygiecracy - 11 hours ago
Originally published on CounterPunch While most cops - as so many contend in the USA these days - may not be racists (let's say, for the sake of argument, that they aren't), it is nevertheless still the case that the police, as an institution, is racist through and through. This is because, among other things, as an institution, the police is an appendage of the larger institution of property. The police serves property. And property - in the US at the very least - is inextricable from racist dispossessions of wealth. Property is racist. Indeed, it is no coincidence that the term ... more »

*Plunging Oil Prices May Trigger Unrest -- Mark Thompson, CNN* A global glut of oil will persist next year, putting further pressure on prices and raising the risk of unrest in some producing countries. That's the stark warning from the Paris-based International Energy Agency, which on Friday cut its forecast for global demand growth in 2015. It now sees demand growing by less than 1% next year. Oil prices have already fallen by more than 40% in six months, but there's little sign of that stimulating demand yet, or constraining production enough to remove excess supply. "Oil pri... more »

It will cost $400M to keep CF-18s flying until 2025 while Harper decides whether to buy F-35 jets: report

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 20 hours ago
[image: CF-18 Hornet]A long-awaited market analysis into which fighter jet could replace the CF-18s tells the Harper government it can postpone a decision and keep flying the current fleet until 2025, but it will cost roughly $400 million. The report by a panel of independent experts, part of a package of documents put before the federal cabinet last summer, warns that the aging jets should not be flown much past that date because that would pose an unacceptable, costly risk. All of the research was done to help the Harper government decide whether to continue with the oft-maligned... more »

Hospital face pressures as winter hits - health leaders - BBC News

The BBC once again manage to report on the pressures faced by the NHS, without exploring why demand is rising. There's a few lines that hint at rising demand but that's all: '"While the NHS is used to seeing a spike in demand during winter months, this year emergency departments have experienced a spring, summer and autumn crisis as well, leaving no spare capacity in hospitals as we approach winter." At the same time, GP surgeries are struggling to cope with unprecedented levels of demand."' Now why might demand be unprecedented? Could one factor be that the massive rise in imm... more »

It’s no secret that the United States military has some of the most advanced weaponry in the world, but even so, it’s still hard to believe some of the weapons they use nowadays are real. With things like rail guns, self-guiding bullets, and pseudo-mechanical exoskeletons for foot soldiers, our arsenal seems like something straight out of a science fiction movie. The latest addition to the growing list of sci-fi tech is the U.S. Navy’s Laser Weapon System (LaWS for short) — the most advanced “directed energy weapon” the military has deployed to date.
