What Next for Politics?

Phil at All That Is Solid ... - 10 hours ago
It's been a huge week, a profound week for British politics. What does it all mean for the parties and movements jostling for position in the referendum's aftermath? As far as Westminster is concerned, a bullet has been dodged. There is a cloying desire for a return to business as usual, and just as many determined to carry on as if it has. Not least among them is our old pal Dan Hodges. With the referendum done he's turned in one of the worst, most complacent articles I've seen. On the basis of Dave hitting the TV cameras yesterday morning to announce he's tying further Scottish p... more »

A Plan to Convert the US Dollar to Gold as Money

Mark Daniels at Global Political Awakening - 14 hours ago
image source David Redick *Why Gold?* All forms of money serve as a ‘medium of exchange’, and ‘unit of account’, which is convenient and flexible compared to barter. Key Point: Note that when a valuable commodity (such as gold) is used as money (‘monetization of gold’), the money is worth as much as the goods or services in the transaction. It is not just a ‘symbol’ or ‘measuring device’. This is also true of barter, but with gold’s high value per weight and volume, etc., using gold is more convenient, and thus helps improve commerce. Two more benefits of using commodity money... more »

Opinion: A Mistral For Canada

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 20 hours ago
[image: Vladivostok LHD]The September decision by France to withhold delivery of two Mistral-class Landing Platforms Helicopter (LPH) building for Russia is an opportunity for NATO, the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and for the French shipbuilding industry and economy. France should not suffer economically for taking a stand against Russia’s aggression toward Ukraine. Rather, NATO, France and Canada can benefit if a little mutually beneficial creativity is applied. While France desperately wants to complete the two amphibious warships — and get paid for them — NATO and Canada need the ... more »

[image: Eurofighter Typhoon & Tu-95 Bear]RAF Typhoons had to be scrambled this week to intercept two unidentified military aircraft, which turned out to be Russian TU-95 ‘Bear’ strategic bombers on a reconnaissance run. Russia using it’s strategic bomber force to ‘probe’ the airspace of NATO members to test reaction times and response strength was a regular feature of the Cold War, which necessitated a dense network of fast jet squadrons based around the world to intercept, and escort away the Russian craft. They all but ceased with the collapse of the Soviet Union, but acting as a ... more »

This Sunday a major climate-change demonstration, possibly the largest in history, will take place in New York City. As the ice that covers the polar seas is shrinking, while the ice shields that cover Antarctica and Greenland are melting, the number of Americans who believe it isn't happening has risen to 23%. And of course our paid off, or hopelessly dim, members of Congress fail to recognize the urgency of doing something about it. Below the Tomgram masthead, Rebecca Solnit has written a thoughtful wakeup call. For my part, I've added for the climate-change deniers a graph showing the sea levels on the U.S. east coast revealing that (1) there were no ice caps either >100 million years before or 30 million years after the impact of a monstrous asteroid on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula that killed off the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, (2) the sea levels were extremely high when there were no ice caps (compare with height of the George Washington Monument), and (3) the appearance of the ice caps that we presently enjoy may have been linked to a meteor or comet that struck the Chesapeake Bay 35.4 million years ago (and another one of the same type creating a crater of about the same size and age in Siberia). Moral: support those demonstrators in New York this Sunday!

They looked instead for explanations in tribal tradition, sacred books, or the supposed wisdom of shamans, priests and prophets. The most common cover-up for ignorance is to invoke divinity. How To Defeat ISIS: Break Up Iraq And Make Up With Assad

According to the article below, written by a former Naval Intelligence Officer, the quickest and easiest way to defeat ISIS is to break up Iraq into three regions (Sunni, Kurds, Shiite) and make up with Assad in Syria. As long as this war drags on in both countries ISIS will only get stronger and meaner. And the ideas that are outlined below make much more sense on a practical level than the drivel in President Obama's speech last week. ISIS won't ever be defeated if Saudi Arabia has any role in the so-called international coalition, let alone a significant one, which it would if the... more »
