Antonio Villaraigosa asks"Why are teachers unions so opposed to
change?"(July 21). I would like to know why Mr. Villaraigosa is so opposed
to learning the facts about American schools and the Common Core.
Villaraigosa claims that American students do poorly compared to students
in other countries on international tests and that the Common Core will
help us do better. Is he aware that when researchers control for the
effect of poverty, American scores on international tests are at the top of
the world?

A Goldman Sachs managing director has died following an apparent
kiteboarding accident, police said.
The body of 39-year-old Nicholas Valtz was found floating off Lazy Point in
Napeague Harbor, Long Island, on Sunday.
The amateur kiteboarder was still attached to his kite, while his gear was
scattered in a grassy area of the harbor.

Detroit: Water, Water, Everywhere, But Not A Drop To Drink
There's a horrible drought in California and I'm going to rip out my lawn
and replace it with a rock and cactus garden, as several neighbors and
friends already have. The city even offers a cash incentive for doing so.
There are also serious drought conditions on northern Texas, western Nevada
and southeastern Colorado. But not in Detroit-- nor anywhere in Michigan or
Ohio (which is closer to Detroit than lots of Michigan itself is). Plenty
of water there... except for people to use. Well, not all people. Poor
people are the ones who have no water-- tens of thousands of them.

job working for a disabled woman. I'd do simple chores for her and go to
the library to do research for her book on genocide that she was writing.

Israeli snipers have been caught on camera firing upon a Palestinian
civilian of Gaza while he searches for relatives among the rubble of his
city. He is surrounded by medics and international volunteers who are
supporting the search, and bear witness to his shooting.
He is shot first in the hand. While he writhes in shock and pain, and the
others are frozen in fear, the sniper fires a second shot which appears to
be near fatal – his hands flailing intermittently. Finally, a third shot

When CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in
an interview on Sunday what his exit strategy from Gaza is, Netanyahu
replied: “Sustainable quiet. I mean we didn't seek this escalation, Hamas

fire”.
The implication here is clear. Netanyahu is saying that Hamas started the

A charter school in Arizona has come under fire after it was revealed the
school is using controversial books that suggest slavery was actually
beneficial for African-Americans.
Despite the backlash, the school’s principal is defending the use of the

I have been asking myself this question. If the situation were reversed
would I do the same? Would I produce a body count to bolster my position?
And I’d have to say that yes, I probably would do something similar. Not
flaunt the images as the Palestinians and supporters of the Palestinians

Update on the Save the Clinic Campaign
All along, the fundraising campaign by Reproductive Justice New Brunswick
was nothing more than a stop-gap, intended to ensure the continuing
possibility of an abortion clinic that accepted self-referring patients.
Having hit the initial goal of $100,000 last week, yesterday they announced
they're raising their sights in order to buy necessary equipment.

Sonar Systems business has been awarded a contract worth 9.9 million pounds
for provision of its Sea Sentor Surface Ship Torpedo Defence, or SSTD
system, to be used for New Zealand's ANZAC Frigate Systems Upgrade
programme.
Under this contract the Group will deliver two Sea Sentor SSTD Systems.

State commission inks acceptance certificate for corvette "Stoiky"

acceptance / handover certificate for the newest corvette "Stoiky", the
third serial corvette of project 20380 (Steregushchy class).
The ship was built at St. Petersburg based Severnaya Verf (part of the
United Shipbuilding Corporation), the Corp. said in a press release.
The name of the third serial 20380-design corvette is inherited from its
famous predecessors: the first of Baltic Fleet's 7U project destroyer that

excessive that navy officers worried for a time that it had become more
vulnerable to torpedoes and other weapons that home in on sound, according
to a military report obtained by the Citizen.
Royal Canadian Navy officials were scrambling last year to deal with the

Future submarines: Australia's $40 billion risk

submarines in Australia involves many hurdles and risks. It would be hugely
wasteful for politicians, admirals and officials to again make hasty
choices that again steer this country into a Collins disaster.
When the future planning Defence White Paper is published next year it will
be too early to decide on "local or foreign built?" issues because Japanese
