things i heard at the library: an occasional series: # 6

laura k at wmtc - 28 minutes ago
This is my first unhappy "things i heard at the library" post. Today I saw a child being abused. It happened so fast, it was over and the parent gone before I had could clearly register what had happened. I was sitting on the edge of our lighthouse, the play space in the centre of our children's library, collecting books left inside. A child was crying. He couldn't have been more than three years old. His mother was yelling at him in a language I don't understand. She grabbed his arm roughly, jerking him backwards. His head hit the lighthouse, right next to me. Then she yanked hi... more »

CPC3 - No, It's Not a Star Wars Character

The Root of All Evil

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 58 minutes ago
Liberal, New Democrat, choose your poison. Layton, Ignatieff, Mulcair, Rae or Trudeau, makes no difference to me. They sold me out and they sold you out in the bargain. To echo Mulroney's attack on Turner, they had a choice. Not one of them chose us, you and me. No matter how well Steve Harper did, three out of five voted for someone else. But Steve wasn't content with winning, he wasn't even content with winning a majority. Steve had to sever the Canadian public from their own government, the public servants we pay to toil in *our* interests. If the government uses taxpayer m... more »

Tundra is Fuel and It Will Burn Us

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 1 hour ago
We hear a lot about the tundra that blankets the far north thawing due to global warming. As it thaws it releases previously trapped methane and CO2. Well it does more than that. As tundra thaws it turns into fuel for wildfires. And let's put it this way, fire fighting isn't very effective up there. In 2007, a tundra fire on the Anaktuvuk river in Alaska showed what's at stake. *"'Fire has been largely absent from tundra for the past 11,000 or so years, but the frequency of tundra fires is increasing, probably as a response to climate warming,' said co-author Syndonia "Donie... more »

What Mattered This Week?

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 1 hour ago
I'm confident that Jim DeMint's resignation matters, although to be honest I'm not exactly sure how. At the very least: as I always say, ever Senator counts. DeMint's replacement will vote about how he votes, but there's more to being a Senator than floor voting -- as DeMint's career demonstrates. Something that doesn't matter? Well, I already talked about the super-early 2016 polling, but I'll stick with that. What else? What do you think mattered this week?

They provided a limited listing of the cases included in it, and in today’s world, it is possible to access some of that information. Summary judgment not blocked by "massive" record of respondent

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 6 hours ago
Fairview Donut Inc. v. The TDL Group Corp., 2012 ONCA 867 deals with granting summary judgment in the face of a significant documentary record. Commonly, on a summary judgment motion the respondent presents a massive record in hopes of showing the matter is so complex as to require trial. Here the Court of Appeal rejected that approach and held a massive record, unless it raises some triable issue, is no bar to summary judgment: [7] We acknowledge that the appellants' proposed class action is a large one, with a massive documentary record, and, potentially, a great deal ... more »

The cure for California’s vocabulary crisis: Invest in libraries and librarians

Sent to the San Jose Mercury News, December 7, 2012 California’s low performance on the NAEP vocabulary test is no surprise (“California eighth-grade students score fifth from bottom in national vocabulary tests,” December 6, 2012). Research done over the last few decades, published in numerous scholarly books and scientific journal papers has informed us that advanced vocabulary knowledge is a result of reading, especially self-selected reading that young people are genuinely interested in reading. Research also tells us that young people read more when they have access to interest...more »

GOD DOES NOT LIKE REVOLUTIONS

[image: Boy, Pelabuhan Ratu, Java] God does not like revolutions. Sand will settle out of water in time if the water is left undisturbed. The Czech philosopher Comenius said: "Let all things spontaneously flow; let there be no violence to things". The Taoists would agree. Taoists believe we should cultivate "a state of being in which our actions are quite effortlessly in alignment with the ebb and flow of the elemental cycles of the natural world. A number of folks have injected themselves into this story, so it is my turn. Firstly, having the paper rejected is no surprise as there are no peers except in regards to DNA work. It is also quite reasonable at this stage for the DNA work to be challenged. What will be interesting are the objections raised. Since the work was apparently done to a high standard, it may simply be too difficult to raise that standard. In the meantime we are flying blind'. However there is a real problem here. The work required two separate hypothesis: 1 A unknown hominid exists. ie. Bi... more »

Slowly but surely we are learning to apply MRI data to query the patient. It can become effective and needs to be. Certainly we have plenty of cooperative patients here. Then other data is associated with the string to establish data communication flow. I think this could be made to work. These people are in prisons and lack sensory stimulation. It should be easy to fix that. Right now they are simply trying to ask a couple of questions. *Breakthrough... more »

I have problems with the conclusions been drawn here in this item and do not trust them at all. I would like to have data that likely does not even exist yet. However, it at least draws attention to a mechanism. Beyond that the global atmospheric CO2 content has continued to climb and has reached and passed the ten percent mark over the past forty years. This is obviously significant and remains troublesome. The very good news is that geological carbon consumption is ready to flatten out and enter a long decline as superior energy sources are put into play. Yet human p... more »

The one aspect of present climate punditry that has been a skeleton in the closet has been a decided inattention to the Arctic's historical record as we have it before the advent of sat elites. This item is a small step to remedy all that. The point is that warming in the Arctic appears to come in sustained surges that last several years before reversion to the natural average. The important question that remains unanswered is whether any of it represents compelling trend lines outside the expected recovery from the little ice age and even that may be just an excessive... more »

My grandfather - my mother's dad - was proud of his 40-year pin from General Electric. There were a few years when he didn’t work, during the Depression. My grandmother served up food to the desperate men who showed up at the door, despite her family’s own hard times. But mostly, over more than four decades, Arthur Jones walked a long block down Lansdowne to the Davenport Works each day, came home for lunch, and went back in the afternoon. There was an implicit deal - do the job well, and GE’s managers would do their job well so you would continue to be employed. I thought about my g... more »

Nine degrees of conspiracy kookification: "The Attack of the Gay Muslim Kenyan Divorcee President"

KenInNY at DownWithTyranny! - 18 hours ago
*by Ken* "It was both a good year and a bad one for conspiracy theories and theorists," says *The New Yorker*'s Alex Koppelman in a new blogpost, "2012: The Year of the Attack of the Gay Muslim Kenyan Divorcee President." For one thing, Neil Armstrong died. That was sad for many reasons; included among them is that now he'll never be able to reveal the secret about the moon landing. On the other hand, it was a Presidential-election year, a particularly fertile time for conspiracy theorizing. People are fixated on an enemy, and they just need to take the next step and imagine all o... more »

Catcher in the Rye dropped from US school curriculum

Matt at The Coming Crisis - 18 hours ago
Schools in America are to drop classic books such as Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and JD Salinger's Catcher in the Rye from their curriculum in favour of 'informational texts'. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/booknews/9729383/Catcher-in-the-Rye-dropped-from-US-school-curriculum.html *Matt's thoughts:* This is precisely how one would use the educational system to create a police state. First, remove any and all ideas that foment rebellious thought (Catcher), or enforce justice (Mockingbird). Then, replace that information with rote, technocratic ideas that have no em... more »
