This is my first unhappy "things i heard at the library" post. Today I saw a child being abused. It happened so fast, it was over and the parent gone before I had could clearly register what had happened. I was sitting on the edge of our lighthouse, the play space in the centre of our children's library, collecting books left inside. A child was crying. He couldn't have been more than three years old. Shelly Frey, (pictured) a 27-year-old mother of two has been fatally shot by an off-duty sheriff's deputy after he suspected her of shoplifting at a Houston Walmart. We hear a lot about the tundra that blankets the far north thawing due to global warming. As it thaws it releases previously trapped methane and CO2. Well it does more than that. As tundra thaws it turns into fuel for wildfires. And let's put it this way, fire fighting isn't very effective up there. Doctors in Portland are searching for the cause of an 18-year-old girl's worsening illness that has taken her legs and is now threatening to take her life. Tabitha Schulke, 18, began experiencing flu-like symptoms on Thanksgiving morning. Suddenly, her illness worsened and she began developing gangrene on her feet. DeMint's replacement will vote about how he votes, but there's more to being a Senator than floor voting -- as DeMint's career demonstrates. Something that doesn't matter? North Korea looks set to delay controversial rocket launch
North Korea will likely postpone the launch of a long-range rocket, state news agency KCNA said on Saturday, but gave no reasons for delaying the plan which has been widely condemned by countries including Russia and the United States. Thailand: Two English Teachers Found Dead
Two English teachers have been found dead sitting side-by-side in the living room of an apartment on the outskirts of Bangkok, according to Thai police. The men - an American aged 40 and a 35-year-old from Britain - were discovered in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to Lieutenant Colonel Chamnong Kongtapan, chief investigator at the local police station in Pathum Thani province. Plane Crashes In Suffolk Village, 1 Dead
One person has died after a light aircraft crashed into a tree in a Suffolk village. Suffolk Police said the aircraft came down in Aldham, near Hadleigh, where it collided with a tree and became submerged in a pond. Communication Across the Vegetative State
Slowly but surely we are learning to apply MRI data to query the patient. It can become effective and needs to be. Certainly we have plenty of cooperative patients here. Using memory chains may turn out useful here. In that case a string of objects are clearly visualized and memorized. Then other data is associated with the string to establish data communication flow. I think this could be made to work. These people are in prisons and lack sensory stimulation. I have problems with the conclusions been drawn here in this item and do not trust them at all. I would like to have data that likely does not even exist yet. However, it at least draws attention to a mechanism. Beyond that the global atmospheric CO2 content has continued to climb and has reached and passed the ten percent mark over the past forty years. A group of divers in Mexico rescue a pregnant whale shark from almost certain death on Wednesday. The divers, who were on a routine tourist trip to a marine nature reserve in Roca Partida, cut a thick rope which had got caught around its body. The whale shark was around 10 metres long and weighed about 15 tonnes
