Sunday Classics preview: This 40-second piano-and-violin excerpt is one of my favorite musical moments
*by Ken*
This roughly 40-second piano-and-violin excerpt is for me a cherished
musical moment, so we've heard it four times -- in performances that are
pretty different but all pretty fine, I think. (We're actually going to
hear another performance I'm not so crazy about.)
I thought I'd hold off a moment identifying, not just the performers but
the music. I'd like to think that listeners who don't recognize the music
may be just a little surprised to learn who wrote it.

Day Of Infamy: Pearl Harbor - Roosevelt Knew!
Seventy-one years ago this fateful day, 6 Japanese fleet carriers of the
main Japanese Naval Strike force known as Kido Butai, launched 351 aircraft
in two waves at the American Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii.
The result of that attack was that 9 American World War I vintage
Battleships were sunk or heavily damaged. There was also some 200+
American Army Airforce planes destroyed at 3 airbases on Oahu. The total
death toll was just over 2,400 men, and women, of the American armed
forces. It has long been seen as a "deliberate attack" by the Japanese

A contingent claim may fall into a bankrupt's estate
Newfoundland and Labrador *v.* AbitibiBowater Inc., 2012 SCC 67 deals with
whether environmental claims by a provincial government fall into

The criterion used by courts to determine whether a contingent claim will
be included in the insolvency process is whether the event that has not yet
occurred is too remote or speculative.

Susan "Genocide" Rice: Is Susan Rice "Bad for Congo"
Critics say Susan Rice is not "Secretary of State" material, but they
couldn't be more wrong. Rice's record of defending mass murder and blacking
out the truth qualifies her for this prestigious position. The Secretary of
State has always been filled by genocidal freaks and mass murderers such as
Madeleine Albright *who defended the killing of 500,000 Iraqi children* by
the United States government.
So, is Susan Rice "bad for Congo"?

Kate Prank Call: Online Backlash At DJs
A fierce online storm has been sparked by the death of a nurse who was the
subject of a prank call by two DJs about the Duchess of Cambridge.
Furious demands were made for the presenters, who work for 2Day FM in
Australia, to resign and for the recording of the hoax to be removed from
the radio station's website.

US boy, 7, pieces together his parents' dismantled gun and shoots his eight-year-old sister
A seven-year-old boy accidentally shot his eight-year-old sister in the arm
after he managed to open a lock box and put together a dismantled gun.
Police say the youngster inadvertently fired at his sister while playing
with the weapon at home in the West Oak Lane area of Philadelphia at around
10.40am on Thursday.
The gun was stored in a lock box at the home of the children's
grandparents, but the boy managed to get hold of the keys, open it up and
put it together.

Kiaran Stapleton holds prison vicar hostage after losing appeal against whole life sentence
A self-proclaimed 'psycho' killer who laughed as he shot a stranger in the
head has tried to take his prison chaplain hostage after his appeal against
a life sentence failed.
Kiaran Stapleton, who bragged 'I can do 30 years standing on my head',
wanted to seek revenge in an attack at Full Sutton prison near York.
In October Stapleton pleaded to have his jail term reduced, despite saying
he whiles away his days in 'the best cell on the wing' waiting for his
favourite soaps to begin while stuffing himself with sweets.

Now Leveson wants new laws to regulate internet: Judge's broadside at Twitter and Google as he calls for end of web 'mob rule'
Lord Justice Leveson has today called for new laws to 'civilise' 'mob rule'
on the internet during a £620-a-ticket Australian lecture on privacy in the
media.
Warning of 'trial by Twitter' the judge said the internet allows people to
make damaging personal accusations and give victims 'unending punishment,
and no prospect of rehabilitation, via Google’.
A prank call by Australian radio presenters who got a condition report from
the Duchess of Cambridge's nurse by pretending to be the Queen and Prince
Charles proved a need for new privacy laws, he added.

Joe Pitts And Grover... Sittin' In A Tree
We'll be learning a lot more about how Joe Pitts males America a worse

In our post from Tuesday discussing the benefits that some congressional
candidates reap for staying committed to changing Washington through
running for office a second time, we also mentioned another type of
commitment... like the one to Grover Norquist that so many Republican House
members just can’t seem to shake.
One of those members in particular has been caught red-handed in trying to
kiss up to Grover and he did it while in the well of Congress just so he
made sure it was on the record.

America's Mini-Civil Wars
There's one brewing in the midwest, another raging in the southeast and a
third building in the southwest. They're regional, inter-state conflicts
over distribution of dwindling groundwater resources.
In the southeast, the Army Corps of Engineers is under simultaneous attack
by lawsuits from Georgia, Florida and Alabama, each state accusing the
Corps of unfairly giving too much of their shared water resource to the
others. It's a situation that could well worsen quickly as sea level rise
begins to impact freshwater reserves including the Everglades.

Interesting question
A similar question could be asked of nearly every single person sitting on
Capitol Hill.
[graphic via]
Nearly all of them accrue significant nest eggs while they're in office and
they leave their political careers with secure lifetime benefits far beyond
what ordinary working people could even imagine. Pretty easy to then call
for painful cuts to what were supposed to be guaranteed benefits to the
people who paid for them over a lifetime when they aren't the ones who are
going to feel the pain.
Wonder How A Truly Warlike Economy Looks? (A National Disgrace)
Oh yes it is. This is not a story about America's insanely bloated
"defense" budget. It is not a story about the bent priorities this nation
has come to accept; to wit: more than half of every dollar collected in
taxes goes to warfare and spying, a multi-trillion dollar industry, while
we reel through national "debates" about cutting health care benefits for
old people and closing schools

Old Pesticide Manufacturing Site Has Imminent Cleanup
Rachel Rindfleisch at Contaminated Nation - Water Contamination, Land Pollution & Hazardous Waste locations - 12 hours ago
By: Duane Craig
Contaminated land on Whiteford Road in Whiteford, Md., nears a cleanup,
according to this article. The soil on the site is laced with arsenic left
behind from a chemical and fertilizer manufacturer.
Up until 1976, the manufacturer released waste from its mixing operations
into a pond on the property. The waste then flowed through a ditch and into
a nearby stream. While the chemical operation stopped using the pond in the
1970s, the adjacent packing company continued to use it for years afterward.
On the soil’s surface, arsenic has been recorded at 459 parts per bill... more »

British Nurse Hoaxed by Australian Radio DJs Takes Own Life
Jacintha Saldanha was on duty when two Aussie DJs tricked her into thinking
they were the Queen and Prince Charles calling for an update on the Duchess
of Cambridge. Saldanha put the call through to a duty nurse who divulged
confidential, intimate information about the expectant royal.
Just before 9:30, London time, this morning Saldanha was found
unconscious. She died shortly afterward from an apparent suicide.
A spokesman for St. James Palace said at no time did the palace complain
but, instead, offered its full support to the nurses.
Saldanha was a married mother of two.

China is now the biggest importer, exporter, and consumer of illegal timber

neighbouring countries such as Myanmar to remote areas of Africa.
With domestic forests incapable of meeting surging demand, China has a
gaping and growing timber deficit that can only be filled by imports. In
2011, China imported a massive 180 million cubic metres (RWE), a three-fold

Dutch to Send Turkey 2 Patriot Systems

Parliament must sign off on the Cabinet decision, but Prime Minister Mark

The Dutch decision comes a day after Germany agreed to send two Patriot
