  • Mercury in seafood: Where does it come from? (Grist):
“Most of the fish that people in the U.S. eat are from the open ocean. And most of the mercury that goes into the open ocean is from atmospheric emissions, which comes from fossil fuel burning,” says Chen, a food chain biologist from Dartmouth. Coal-fired power plants are the biggest source, globally.

Ouch! Sharp Lessons From Deepwater Horizon

Context on government enabling and promotion is woefully inadequate. BP did not pursue tax relief on oil depletion for deep wells in a vacuum, any more than one drills to record depths past the limits of technology without incentive. That incentive remains mostly unmentioned and definitely untouched.  Health challenges all around the Gulf of Mexico as recounted on YouTube must spring from some source - and use of what should have been a prohibited agent looms large as likely cause.
Check out Dr. Riki Ott`s research since she was subjected to toxins in the Exxon Valdez operation.  Florida Oil Spill Law kept a record of relevant info for months. Stewart Smith has picked up the torch.

    Following the Fiscal Cliff Negotiations

Just a few points: 1. What gets reported from the negotiators is usually *part of the negotiations*. That is, reporters hear what the negotiators want them to hear. And you can't even assume which way it's slanted (if at all); one of the players may believe it's in his interest to stress how reasonable he's being, or how tough he's being. Doesn't mean it's really true. 2. That might include deliberate trial balloons -- but they usually aren't labeled trial balloons! 3. Advocates on both sides have will generally have a strong incentive to push for more -- to denounce the weakness o... more »

The decline of America's "great equalizer"

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 3 hours ago
When Puritan settlers established America's first public school here in 1635, they planted the seed of a national ideal: that education should serve as the country's "great equalizer." Americans came to believe over time that education could ensure that all children of any class had a shot at success. And if any state should be able to make that belief a reality, it was Massachusetts. The Bay State is home to America's oldest school, Boston Latin, and its oldest college, Harvard. It was the first state to appoint an education secretary, Horace Mann, who penned the "equalizer" motto ... more »

    Booger Bear

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 9 hours ago
This material pulls together the scant material that we have relating to possible short faced bear sightings throughout the Americas. The original has a lot of pictures to attempt to image the creature and this chops up the text. This adds a third large creature out there in the woods that could reasonably still survive. We have the well observed Bigfoot ( approximately 10,000) and several sightings that are surely the so called extinct Giant Sloth. This all against a dense population of bears which is the assumed identification in almost all cases. It is clear that... more »

    Khan on Education

Education is still operating in the dark ages and most talent is wasted unless that talent develops the desire to improve his mind and talent in a directed way. It is also misled by the false strength of memory training itself. After all a perfect memory of the content of a textbook allows you to write an excellent exam. Yet it did not necessarily induce new connections in the brain itself. For this reason I have observed that the cases of photographic memory that I have come across have often turned out to be immature in terms of actual reasoning. In fact the ones I have... more »
