Vancouver Region Bracing for Storm Surge, King Tides and Flooding.

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 11 minutes ago
The next couple of days pose a serious flooding threat to the Lower Mainland, particularly Vancouver's low-lying suburbs. *Sunday and Monday are expected to see the strongest of the seasonal "king tides", with levels over 5 metres above low tide.** But Oceanographer Scott Tinis says a storm surge will bring that several feet higher.** "Places such as Boundary Bay are particularly susceptible to not only the raising sea levels but the wind waves. So low-lying areas, especially near river deltas , may see some localized flooding." ** Tinis says the last time we saw ocean levels this hig... more »

Back when I was in graduate school and preparing to write my dissertation, I learned that the first thing you did to prepare was make a search of the literature… well, the second thing, after you have figured out what you wanted to research. You looked to see what others had done before you, if someone had already accomplished what you wanted to, and how you might improve on both your idea and what had gone before. Apparently in UFO research, this is not the case. I don’t know how many times we must revisit cases that seem to have been solved, that seem to have nothing to do with ... more »

The 1967-'68 school year was an exciting one for me. I had been freshman class president the year before and was then elected to head the Student Activities Board, which had a huge budget. We had a great series of concerts-- at least from my perspective. I got to book whatever I wanted. To be honest, most of the students hated the groups I booked, although I bet you couldn't find anyone who would admit that today. But they used to try to impeach me for wasting student funds on "trash" like The Doors, The Dead, Hendrix, Big Brother, The Who. Oh, there were people who loved that stuf... more »

Bullet Control

Hmm...I was just saying to middle daughter Sophie (who was in Philly for job interviews when the horrific Sandy Hook massacre happened) that any attempt to confiscate guns in the US would precipitate a civil war with gun lovers - who notoriously will cling to their weapons until they are pried from their cold dead fingers - and so a better way to address gun violence would be to restrict, or tax, ammunition (this could be done simply by regulating lead, a known toxin and essential ingredient of bullets). Then I saw this:

Heavy snow blocks roads, cuts power in northern Ukraine

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 21 hours ago
Heavy snowfall and strong wind blocked roads across northern Ukraine and left hundreds of villages without electricity, authorities said Tuesday. The Emergencies Ministry said sleet, snow and powerful wind brought down power lines in some 200 villages in northern Ukraine. With snow as thick as 50 cm in some areas, hundreds of cars were blocked on the snow-covered highways in the northern Kiev and Chernigov regions. http://www.china.org.cn/world/Off_the_Wire/2012-12/11/content_27385248.htm

Leaking barge spilling fuel oil into New York waters

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 21 hours ago
A barge with a leaking cargo tank spilled fuel oil into a New York City waterway on Saturday, officials said. The barge was carrying 112,000 gallons of No. 6 fuel oil, but it was unclear how much oil spilled into the water, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement. The spill came from a Boston Marine Transport Inc barge due to a leak from its cargo tank, it said. http://news.yahoo.com/leaking-barge-spilling-fuel-oil-york-waters-coast-153443482.html

ACCORDING TO ECONOMIST DEAN BAKER, CONGRESSIONAL REPUBLICANS ARE "TOTALLY DISHONEST" WHEN THEY SAY THAT WASHINGTON HAS A "SPENDING PROBLEM" THAT GIVES RISE TO THE SO-CALLED "FISCAL CLIFF." FIRST, REPUBLICANS SEE NO SPENDING PROBLEM AT ALL WHEN IT'S FOR THE MILITARY/INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX, ONLY WHEN IT'S FOR THE SOCIAL SAFETY NET, WHICH COSTS MANY TIMES LESS. IN FACT A FISCAL CLIFF DOESN'T REALY EXIST AT ALL. IF NOTHING IS DONE BY JANUARY 1ST, NOTHING BAD WILL HAPPEN.

------------------------------ *Dean Baker: The Biggest Myth in Obama-GOP Spending Showdown is the "Fiscal Cliff" Itself* Original Here As negotiations continue between the White House and House Speaker John Boehner, leading economist Dean Baker joins us to discuss the myths about the so-called fiscal cliff. With little more than two weeks before the deadline, President Obama insists on an immediate increase in the top two income-tax rates as a condition for further negotiations on changes to spending and entitlement programs. But Boehner said Washington’s "spending problem" is ... more »

Guns Don't Kill People--Crazy People with Guns Kill People

Jim Horn at Schools Matter - 22 hours ago
From Kristof at NYTimes: By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF IN the harrowing aftermath of the school shooting in Connecticut, one thought wells in my mind: Why can’t we regulate guns as seriously as we do cars? The fundamental reason kids are dying in massacres like this one is not that we have lunatics or criminals — all countries have them — but that we suffer from a political failure to regulate guns. Children ages 5 to 14 in America are 13 times as likely to be murdered with guns as children in other industrialized countries, according to David Hemenway, a public health specialist at Harvar... more »

Iran warns against Patriot stationing near Syria, "They are making plans for a world war"

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 22 hours ago
Iran's army chief of staff warned NATO on Saturday that stationing Patriot anti-missile batteries on Turkey's border with Syria was setting the stage for world war. General Hassan Firouzabadi, whose country has been a staunch supporter of President Bashar al-Assad throughout the 21-month uprising against his rule, called on the Western military alliance to reverse its decision to deploy the defense system. "Each one of these Patriots is a black mark on the world map, and is meant to cause a world war," Firouzabadi said, according to the Iranian Students' News Agency. "They are maki... more »

What Mattered This Week?

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 23 hours ago
Putting aside the horrible shooting in Connecticut... I'll say that the new actions by the Fed mattered -- not just in terms of the economy, but politically as well. And for something that I suspect didn't matter, I'll go with the North Korea launch. What else? What do you think mattered this week?

Golden Dawn: Anti-Neo-Nazi Protests In Athens

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 23 hours ago
Activists from 20 countries have gathered in Athens to demonstrate against rising attacks by a neo-Nazi movement critics call the most dangerous in Europe. The protest is backed by scores of civil rights groups, anti-racist movements and imposing intellectuals, including Nobel laureates Dario Fo and Bernard Kouchner. It comes amid heightened shows of vigilantism and attacks on migrants by Golden Dawn, the once-tiny far-right group that catapulted onto Greece's tumultuous political scene last June after winning 18 seats in the country's 300-member parliament. http://news.sky.com/st... more »

Nothing to Say Today

I'm so sick with sadness about the tragic shooting that I really cannot post beyond this short notice today. We are truly living in dark times. Indeed, we are degenerating into collective madness. Every child's death from senseless violence (by individual mad men, institutional war machines, and as corporate externalities), starvation, malnutrition, neglect and dispossession marks our descent into species genocide. The scale of our descent is unprecedented. Symptoms of our collective descent are everywhere - in the dispossession of Fukushima's children, in the civilian casualties... more »

Ron Barber (AZ)-- As Bad As We Feared... And He's Just Getting Started

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 23 hours ago
Arizona Democrats, for largely emotional reasons, picked conservative corporate shill Ron Barber, a former staffer for Gabby Giffords, to replace Giffords. Last month, in one of the closest contests in the country, Barber managed to hold onto Giffords' seat against formidable GOP opposition, 143,173 (50%) to 141,771 (50%). Republican Martha McSally spent $1,393,346 and outside groups spent in the neighborhood of $2 million to support her. Barber outraised her significantly and spent $2,637,022, with outside groups kicking in close another million on his behalf (although that inclu... more »

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 1 day ago
Hospitals across the country are closing their doors to visitors because of outbreaks of the winter vomiting bug norovirus. Birmingham City Hospital has asked visitors to stay away after closing four wards while at Maidstone Hospital in Kent three wards have closed to new admissions and visitors have been banned from all wards. The George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton has shut one ward, partially closed three wards and is turning away visitors.
