The Syrian-Turkish Border Is A Flashpoint For WWIII

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 2 minutes ago
At the moment, there is a low-level conflict on the Syrian-Turkish border. There have been *clashes throughout the past year*, often times stoked by the FSA, the foreign-backed Jihadist insurgency that is fighting Assad. But if the United States government has anything to say about it this conflict will get much larger. Washington has *deployed Patriot missiles and soldiers to the Turkish border* to send a message to Syria* *that it is serious about its threat to overthrow its regime. There are many regional flashpoints in the Middle East, but military experts believe that the Syri... more »

ECUADOR has issued an orange alert - the second-highest warning level - for towns near the Tungurahua volcano, as its level of activity rose, civil defence officials say. The area of the warning covers the adjacent provinces of Tungurahua and Chimborazo, according to the national civil defence agency. Greater activity has been building since Wednesday, along with a slight increase in gas emissions from the 5029-metre volcano, located about 135km south of the capital Quito, the Geophysical Institute said. http://www.news.com.au/world/ecuador-declares-volcano-alert/story-fndir2ev-122... more »

Mayan 'death and rebirth' date marks the perfect time to tackle planet's crisis

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 4 minutes ago
At 12 minutes past noon last Wednesday, 12.12.12, 12 minutes of wintry stillness was broken by the low chime of a gong. The crowd gathered around the Chalice Well beneath Glastonbury Tor linked hands, looked skywards, then touched the earth. A multitude of others did the same across the world – only this place, as everyone knows, is rather special. For many people, these days between last Wednesday, 12 December, and the winter solstice on 21 December next Friday constitute a portal of some kind, based upon a convergence of predictions in ancient calendars, notably that of the Maya i... more »

Emerging Europe: Goal challenged

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 4 minutes ago
For the countries of central and eastern Europe, the unassailable momentum of integration with Europe’s west has been a double-edged sword. Government is force and coercion. It is an institution created by men and women mainly to protect themselves, their families and friends, their properties, from bullies among the population. The scope and senselessness of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting challenged television journalists’ ability to do much more than lend, or impose, their presence on the scene. Pressed with the awful urgency of the story, TV, along with other media, fell prey to reporting “facts” that were often in conflict or wrong. How many people were killed? Which Lanza brother was the shooter: Adam or Ryan? Was their mother, who was among the slain, a teacher at the school? http://connecticut.cbslocal.com/2012/12/15/as-shooting-story-unfolds-media-struggle-with-facts/ *Not just the Media, confl... more »

Are we living in an insanity epidemic? Yes indeed, we certainly are, according to *The Invisible Plague* by Dr. Edwin Fuller Torrey and Judy Miller. This book provides an illuminating history of insanity, focusing on the last three centuries in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and the United States. “Insanity” here refers to two conditions, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder (manic-depressive). Today, “psychosis” is the proper term for describing insanity and lunacy, but the authors preferred to use history’s word, insanity. The objective of this book was to convince us that... more »

So powerfully has this been done that even the word "entitlement" has been transformed to mean not something deserved but something somehow undeserved, a handout, an unfair demand by the grubby "takers" on the unappreciated "makers." Rarely do you find retorts like that of sociologist/author James Petras who sets the record straight. *The “entitlement” rhetoric claims that the lifetime contributions are insufficient and that severa... more »

Chief Spence's Hunger Strike

Chief Spence of Attawapiskat must be on Day Seven of her hunger-strike in the shadow of Parliament Hill. The AFN is seeking to have Harper meet with regional and tribal council chiefs from across the country. Aside from a meeting between a handful of chiefs and Harper in his Langevin Block office and informal chats during a day of speeches, there was no direct discussions between the prime minister and First Nations leaders during last January’s Crown-First Nations gathering. Wasserman Schultz Still Has Her Knives Out For Annette Taddeo (And All Progressives)

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 15 hours ago
Who remembers when Debbie Wasserman Schultz, then just the lowly head of the DCCC's Red to Blue program, moved in to torpedo the candidacy of progressive Democrat Annette Taddeo (and two other Democrats) on behalf of her Republican pals, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and the notoriously corrupt Diaz-Balart brothers (who, like Debbie, are subsidiaries of the Fanjul sugar empire)? She's a much bigger shot now; Obama appointed her head of the DNC... and Pelosi allowed her to jump over dozens of more worthy Democrats for a clear path to the speakership in a few years. (Her dream, like her mento... more »

Evidence Suggests Now Is The Time For Pension Reform

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 15 hours ago
Martin Regg Cohn writes that federal bureaucrats have presented Finance Minister Jim Flaherty with a plan to shore up the faltering Canadian pension system. Private pensions have been decimated by the Neo Conservative Revolution. Cohn writes: The world of pensions is collapsing around us. Traditional “defined-benefit” pensions that reliably promise to pay a fixed amount in future — really the only payments worthy of the name “pension” — are being phased out in the private sector. The registered savings and pooled plans offered up as alternatives are merely Potemkin pensions — glo... more »

Free Chen Shui-bian? Foreigners, Think about it

Michael Turton at The View from Taiwan - 16 hours ago
[image: Pingtung_69] *K-town by night.* China Post editorial today puts its finger on a problem: He wants to found a new political party to succeed an aging former President Lee Teng-hui as godfather of the Taiwan Independence Movement. Mr. Graft had his son Chen Chih-chung, a first-term Kaohsiung municipal councilman summarily disqualified for involvement in his father's money laundering, broach the news that a new party will come into being at a time “favored by Heaven and benefited by Earth.” This is to be achieved by a unity of purpose among his “One Country on Each Side Allianc... more »

Ordering ambiguities and renormalization ambiguities

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 16 hours ago
Greta asked: I have been told that \[ [\hat x^2,\hat p^2]=2i\hbar (\hat x\hat p+\hat p\hat x) \] illustrates *ordering ambiguity*. What does that mean? I tried googling but to no avail. Thank you. *LM:* The ordering ambiguity is the statement – or the "problem" – that for a classical function \(f(x,p)\), or a function of analogous phase space variables, there may exist multiple operators \(\hat f(\hat x,\hat p)\) that represent it i.e. that have the right form in the \(\hbar\to 0\) limit. In particular, the quantum Hamiltonian isn't uniquely determined by the classical limit.... more »

Elder of Ziyon: Palestinian Arabs - killing their own kids to win a propaganda war

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 16 hours ago
'Think about it from the Palestinian Arab leaderships' perspective. If Israel gives them free treatment, they win. If the children die because Israeli hospitals cannot afford to provide free care for them, they simply publicize this and they win even more. The only losers are the Palestinian Arab people - and they are just cannon fodder anyway, if you are Mahmoud Abbas or Khaled Meshal. Merkel rips German opposition for blocking tax cuts

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 16 hours ago
Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized the centre-left opposition for blocking her government's efforts to cut income taxes by 6 billion euros, telling a German newspaper those parties will have to explain that to voters in next year's election. Merkel, seeking a third term in September, also found fault with Social Democrats (SPD) and Greens in a newspaper interview for thwarting a deal with Switzerland to tax assets stashed by Germans in Swiss banks although without revealing their names. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/12/16/us-germany-politics-merkel-idUSBRE8BF05720121216

*Forgiveness* *A true story from ‘The Art of Forgiveness’ chapter in Jack Kornfield’s book Bringing Home the Dharma:* One 14-year old boy in the (juvenile offenders) program had shot and killed an innocent teenager to prove himself to his gang. At the trial, the victim’s mother sat impassively silent until the end, when the youth was convicted of the killing. After the verdict was announced, she stood up slowly and stared directly at him and said, “I’m going to kill you.” Then the youth was taken away to serve several years in the juvenile facility. Police arrested 18-year-old Sammie Eaglebear Chavez at about 4:30 a.m. Friday after learning of the alleged plot Thursday, the Associated Press reported. Newtown Shooting remains a complex investigation as authorities sort out conflicting reports of Newtown gunman's relationship to school - and if his mother was a teacher there

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 18 hours ago
There are certain unmitigated facts – that a gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday morning, and that as a direct consequence, 27 people in the small town of Newtown, Connecticut are dead. But as the investigation into the shooting goes on, many aspects of it remain complex. Perhaps the biggest question lingering on people’s minds across the nation is why the shooting happened – something that may never be answered in a satisfactory manner. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2248898/Sandy-Hook-Elementary-School-Shooting-remains-complex-investigation.html
