Britain 'wasting' £230m in aid to Nigerian schools: Pupils left to play games as teachers fail to turn up says report....But will give them another £126m Anyway

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 19 minutes ago
A £230million British aid programme to boost schools in Nigeria has produced ‘no major improvement in pupil learning’, a study warns today. The Independent Commission on Aid Impact says UK-funded education programmes are struggling to make any difference to Nigeria’s chaotic education system. Britain has poured £102million into education in ten of Nigeria’s 36 states during the last seven years, and is due to spend a further £126million by 2019. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2235488/Britain-wasting-230m-aid-Nigerian-schools-Pupils-left-play-games-teachers-fail-turn-says-re... more »

Cameron to stop repeat of Hamza fiasco after vowing to cut short appeals made by illegal immigrants and terrorist suspects....How about you scrap the Appeal, and stick them on a plane?

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 22 minutes ago
Illegal immigrants and terrorist suspects with no right to remain in Britain will be forced out of the country quicker after David Cameron said he would cut short their appeals yesterday. The Prime Minister announced plans to speed up government, including overhauling the system of judicial reviews which lawyers can use to protest against the government. The plans were billed as a way of curtailing opposition to new infrastructure projects but the vast majority of judicial reviews concern immigration cases. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2235573/Cameron-stop-repeat-Hamza-f... more »

Sally Bercow does it again: After McAlpine gaffe, Speaker's wife breaks court ban by naming runaway girl on Twitter

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 22 minutes ago
Sally Bercow has blundered on Twitter again by naming a runaway schoolgirl whose identity was protected by a court order. The Speaker’s wife could face a £5,000 fine for contempt of court after breaching the order which bans the naming of the girl who allegedly ran away with her teacher to France this year. Mrs Bercow’s gaffe comes just a fortnight after she used Twitter to name former Tory treasurer Lord McAlpine following a BBC2 Newsnight report which alleged a senior Conservative figure from the Thatcher era was a child abuser. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2235398/Sa... more »

Google should not be accused of "unfair" acts: lawmakers

Two lawmakers urged the Federal Trade Commission on Monday to steer clear of expanding its authority as it investigates allegations search engine company Google violated antitrust law. The two California Democrats in the House of Representatives, who count Google as a major campaign contributor, asked the FTC not to accuse the company of "unfair" acts if it believes it broke antitrust law. Sandy's impact may be worse than estimated

A recent string of weak economic data suggests the recovery may take a much bigger hit from superstorm Sandy than first thought, but economists have yet to abandon hopes for a quick rebound. Data covering retail sales, industrial production and first-time applications for unemployment benefits have shown unexpected weakness, raising concerns among analysts that they might have underestimated the damage from the storm. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/19/us-usa-economy-storm-idUSBRE8AI12W20121119

Syria Crisis: Turkey Demands NATO Missile Shield On Border

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 31 minutes ago
Turkey is expected to formally request on Monday that NATO Patriot missiles be placed on its border to defend against Syrian attacks, Western officials said. Syrian rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad have been able to take large swathes of land but are almost defenceless against Syria's air force. The rebels have called for an internationally enforced no-fly zone, a measure that helped Libyan rebels overthrow their long-term leader last year. German Defence Minister Thomas de Maiziere said Germany expected Turkey to make the request to NATO for Patriot deployment on Monday a... more »

Islamists Reject Syria Rebel Group, as EU Embraces It

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 39 minutes ago
Syrian Islamists fighting the Assad regime rejected a newly formed opposition umbrella group, raising questions about whether the new alliance can achieve its objective: to create a moderate force that can get funds and arms from foreign allies. The umbrella group also got a boost Monday when the European Union labeled the coalition "legitimate representatives" of the Syrian people. The move stopped short of a French push for the EU to formally recognize the group, as did France, Qatar and Turkey earlier. EdM's One Nation in Europe speech today at the CBI conference formally marks an interesting shift in Labour Party positioning on the EU. I say interesting because for too long Labour has ceded this political ground to the right. Defending the EU as is may have attraction for some, but having little to nothing to say about wasteful spending (the Strasbourg-Brussels merry-go-round, anyone?), questionable subsidies, and the democratic void that lies at the heart of the European project is no way to defend the EU from those who would like to see British withdrawal to the margins. Fordo, which Iran only told the IAEA about in 2009, began in 2011 to enrich uranium to purities of 20 percent, a process that lies at the heart of the international community's concerns. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gnwiLhmjSJidVIa... more »

Germany expects Turkish request for NATO missiles soon

Forget the Fiscal Cliff: Why Obama Is in Asia

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 12 hours ago
It might seem strange that newly re-elected President Barack Obama has chosen this moment to jet off to Asia. After all, he’s left a mess of problems back home. The White House is in the midst of tense negotiations with Republican Congressmen over a budget compromise to avoid the looming “fiscal cliff.” The nation is still smarting from a long and divisive election. And even in the realm of foreign policy, Asia doesn’t seem to be the priority right now, with a conflict escalating between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Obama isn’t even visiting Japan or South Korea, historically America’... more »

To Nate Cohn, who previewed the vote counting and reminded us before the election (as Andrew Sprung reminds us today) that Barack Obama would gain considerable ground on Mitt Romney after election day -- a lot after election day. The Cook Report's David Wasserman has been keeping tabs on the current vote totals, and finds today that Obama's lead is up to 3.1% nationally, and still rising. That's up from 2.3% the morning after election day; I'm not sure what it was when the networks closed up shop on election night. That's a pretty large swing! Free Planet - I love you, you pay me RENT.

there was a song, in the 1980's by the gay band The Pet Shop Boys that went something like this, "I love you, you pay my RENT." Now, while that song might have been about RENT BOYS i.e. young men who get fucked in the ass for cash, there's still something to be learned about this 'trade in human subjugation'. BTW I'm talking, still, about RENT: *1a. Payment, usually of an amount fixed by contract, made by a tenant at specified intervals in return for the right to occupy or use the property of another. 1b. (By *American Zen*'s Mike Flannigan, on loan from Ari Goldstein.) If one were to listen to long-discredited and worthless MSM organs such as the *NY Times*, the "conflict" between Israel and Palestine in Gaza is an evenly-matched battle of wills, if not armaments, with either claiming an equivalent moral superiority. Cutting through IDF propaganda: Tanks caught on film lining up to fire haphazardly into Gaza

Matt at The Coming Crisis - 13 hours ago
*Commentary:* You'll remember that IDF spokespeople go on and on and on about "conducting only precision strikes against 'terrorist targets'". However, there are multiple reports, and now footage, of Israel simply firing haphazardly Gaza using artillery pieces and tanks. Little difference exists between rockets fired one way and artillery shells (that actually do far more damage) firing in the opposite direction. One wonders where MSM objectivity has gone in during this conflict.

The BBC - plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

The BBC is institutionally anti-Israel, of that there is little doubt. Israel is the only Jewish state in the world (albeit one that is over 25% Muslim in population), so does that make the BBC institutionally anti-Semitic? I am not sure about this but it is pretty clear that to the BBC a good Jew is one who doesn't fight back when attacked. The Jews who died in the holocaust were victims of terror and the BBC support them in their deaths, Jews who fight back against Islamist terror aren't looked upon so favourably by the BBC. Happy Birthday to Jodie Foster, 50. And a bit of good stuff: 1. More on districting, incumbency, and bias, from Eric McGhee. Big point remains the same: the GOP edge this time was in part incumbency, in part gerrymanders, and in part a natural advantage in the House for Republicans. 2. Good point from David Kamin on why cutting discretionary spending seems so easy. 3. Dylan Matthews explains the Mark Begich Social Security bill. 4.
