Scientific method refers to a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry must be based on gathering observable, empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning.[1] A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses.[2]
Although procedures vary from one field of inquiry to another, identifiable features distinguish scientific inquiry from other methodologies of knowledge. Scientific researchers propose hypotheses as explanations of phenomena, and design experimental studies to test these hypotheses. These steps must be repeatable in order to dependably predict any future results. Theories that encompass wider domains of inquiry may bind many independently-derived hypotheses together in a coherent, supportive structure. This in turn may help form new hypotheses or place groups of hypotheses into context.

How does the cultural framing of climate change create division and

inaction?

After reading Kahnan’s research on how groups react to information based on percieved values of the informant and their personal outlook; it made me realise that to really move forward politically and socially we need to learn how to talk one another’s language to be able to understand where one another are coming from. This is the same in so many walks of life so why not for climate change?

Essentially it comes down to is understanding how we see the world through different value frameworks. I might be communitarian, you might be libertarian. I might be pro abortion, you might be against it. These values lie at the bottom of the choices we make, the way we respond to things, the people we socialise with; Often they have this  effect without us conciously knowing it. Thats why studies such as the one I talk about below are important, because they help disentangle the subtle web cast over cultural issues such a climate change by our differing values. They help us understand one another, even if we don’t agree.
This is certainly the starting point for progress and the basis for a more open debate about values in relation to climate change, rather than using pseudo-scientific or pseudo economic arguements to justify conclusions we have come to as a result of values alone. The paper described below is a good first step in gaining some insight.
Today I read this working paper written by Andrew Hoffman of the University of Michigan, entitled:
“Talking Past Each Other? Cultural Framing of Skeptical and Convinced Logics in the Climate Change Debate”
Hoffman decribes the logics of Deniers and Believers as essentially closed and unamenable to arguement, whereas those of convinced and skeptics are much more open to debate, to learning, to asking questions; and indeed represent the majority of people.

Frames and categories used do not threaten people’s values and therefore creative dismissive resistance to the argument
Precisely. Argument does however threaten peoples`values when they associate those values with Who I Am, whether the religious association is recognized or not. That is the overwhelming power of managing the Overton Window of what seems reasonable rather than honest debate dealing with issues over emotion.
You are looking at issues which have preoccupied me for a while.
Might I ask you to check these files and give me your reaction.

This is nothing new to most of you—climate science
deniers’ talking points seem to be in our face all the time
and giving the “debate” any more airtime seems
counterproductive. But maybe there’s something we can
learn from the messages and frames (and messengers) that
are working for the science deniers in order to better hone
climate policy champions’ communications—especially
those that tap into particularly American values like
“personal freedom.”
Andrew Hoffman, the Holcim (US) professor of sustainable
enterprise at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, studied the core values or
worldviews that define the science denial position on climate. He points out that “climate
change has been enmeshed in the culture wars where beliefs in science often align with beliefs
on abortion, gun control, health care, evolution, or other issues that fall along the contemporary
political divide.”
To better understand this “distinctly American phenomenon,” he studied the way climate science
deniers have consistently framed the issue. He’s boiled it down to three themes:

Why do you hate freedom? For science deniers, “climate change is inextricably tied to a belief
that climate science and policy are a covert way for liberal environmentalists and the
government to diminish citizens’ personal freedom.”
Job killers. “A second prominent theme is a strong faith in the free market, an overriding fear
that climate legislation will hinder economic progress, and a suspicion that green jobs and
renewable energy are ploys to engineer the market.”
Pointy-headed scientists. “The most intriguing theme is strong distrust of the scientific peerreview
process and of scientists themselves: “Peer review” turns into “pal review,” and
establishment scientist-editors only publish work by those whose scientific research findings
agree with their own. Scientists themselves are seen as intellectual elites, studying issues that
are beyond the reach of the ordinary person’s scrutiny.”

Our Universe - a completely new look upon some old questions

Ever considered that since the last 10 years sciences are advancing at an ever increasing, nearly logarithmic speed, leaving behind ideas we grew up with at schools?

About the Psychology of the Crowd...

The word is seldom heard, yet it appears to me that the evolution of society his heading towards the 'ochlocracy'. The over-democratized and over-ruled western world and its neighbours (North-Africa, Israel, Syria) are since 2008 looking for answers to a crisis of historic proportions. The evolution of society roughly follows the line from monarchy to kingdom, tyranny, aristocracy, oligarchy, democracy and finally ochlocracy. Western-Europe appears to be on the brink of the latter. Generalized ochlocracy means power to the people, or more precise: power in hands of the crowd, or 'mob-ocracy' as some modernists define it.

( I look at the representations which say the 'Deniers' positions for them - since they are patently incapable of speaking for themselves ! - as evidence of  'Driving the crowds' )

THE UNNATURAL HISTORY OF THE SEA
There are times when the capacity of mankind to blind itself to plain reality is simply breathtaking. Thus to this day we still believe, as was universally believed two centuries ago, that the seas surrounding us afford an infinite source of wealth. As recently as half a century ago, two respected academics asserted in a book titled The Inexhaustible Sea that what the ocean "has to offer extends beyond the limits of our imagination -- that someday men will learn that in its bounty the sea is inexhaustible."
A boundless delusion. What informed scientists now know, as Callum Roberts writes in this measured but passionate and immensely important book -- a persuasive synopsis of existing scholarship augmented by the author's own research -- is that the resources of the sea are as limited as those of land and air, and that our penchant for exploiting them to the point of extinction is appalling.

But even neoConservatives might get one thing somewhat right about the International Tax on the Use of Fire which is proposed as a solution to the world’s problems.
You might not think so if Australia passing such regs against the will of the people was more commonly known. In fact, carbon credits have been prosecuted for fraud in the EU – as trading in a mirage which enables polluters to evade remedial action should be.
We do need pollution solutions. Stage managed ‘debate’ won’t get us there.
