U.S. Spends $180K To Promote Pesticide Residues On Food

The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit research organization based in Washington, D.C., is asking the California Department of Food and Agriculture to reconsider a $180,000 grant given to the Alliance For Food and Farming to combat the negative public perception of pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables. They are also calling for an investigation into how the grant was awarded.

The EWG is known for maintaining the Dirty Dozen List - what they consider to be the twelve most pesticide-contaminated fruits and vegetables. "The industry says it's all safe," said Kari Hamerschlag, a Senior Analyst at EWG. "That's what they said that about DDT in the 60s. We would like more studies."
The Force That Fights Deep-Pocketed Polluters and Wins
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-redford/the-force-that-fights-dee_b_750748.html
In a new book called A Force for Nature, Adams and his wife Patricia explain how they helped build the modern environmental movement. Their account of how NRDC wrote the laws and won the battles that cleaned up the environment is galvanizing -- a bracing reminder of how much can be accomplished by dedicated individuals.

Provinces on hook for any extra prison costs
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/101006/national/prisons_cost?
It's up to the provinces to find their share of the money to handle an expected surge in the prison population, says Public Safety Minister Vic Toews.

The federal government will spend $2 billion over five years to absorb more prisoners because of stiffer sentencing — though critics say the actual price tag will be much higher.

The parliamentary budget officer predicts legislation that will see many prisoners serve additional time behind bars could cost more than $10 billion over five years, with the federal government shelling out $5 billion and provincial governments more.

Ontario, for one, has called on the federal government to compensate the province for any additional costs.

Toews said Wednesday he doesn't know how much the so-called truth-in-sentencing measure — one of several federal legislative changes that could bolster prison ranks — will cost the provinces, but they'll have to shoulder their share of the financial burden.

"The provinces have been active partners in this push for legislation. They are the ones who came to us and said, 'We need this legislation.' So they are our partners, in terms of not only crime-fighting agenda but the cost," Toews said.

"Those are their responsibilities as well. And I believe that they are — many of them are — prepared to shoulder that responsibility."

( Better tax the Hell out of corporations, then. They're going to be the only ones gaining anything from spending more money keeping people away from their families in a time of depression.

Johnson Testified To Protect Catholic Church From Sex Abuse Lawsuits

TPM contacted numerous attorneys, advocates, and other members of the finance council of the Diocese of Green Bay to explain the finance council's role at the church, and the information it was privy to with respect to sexually abusive clergy. What we learned suggests that it's very difficult to separate Johnson's role as finance committee member from his role as legislative witness seeking to protect the Church from future lawsuits, when he told the panel, "I urge you to defeat this legislation."

Mormon Prophecy Behind Glenn Beck's Message
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dana-milbank/post_996_b_749750.html
Large numbers of Mormons watch Beck, but likely an even larger number of his viewers and radio listeners are evangelical Protestants who have no idea that Beck is preaching to them an obscure prophecy of the Latter-day Saints -- a faith many conservative Christians malign* as a cult. In addition to the coded allusions to the White Horse Prophecy, he often brings Mormon theology into his broadcasts (he touts the thinking of late church president Ezra Taft Benson and he frequently promotes the work Mormon conspiracy theorist Cleon Skousen) but without identifying them with the LDS church.

Before the Mormons went west, Smith traveled to Washington seeking help for his oppressed followers and received nothing but frustration. Rather than turning on the government, however, "They considered themselves the last Real Americans, the legitimate heirs of the pilgrims and Founding Fathers," Pat Bagley wrote in the Salt Lake Tribune. "And, they believed, the very survival of the Constitution depended on the Saints. From Smith on, LDS leaders prophesied the Constitution would one day hang by a thread, only to be saved by Mormons."

( Oh heck, I think they are a cult too.
Now ask me what I think of the example of the emperor's church. Yep, that was a deliberate reference to the origins of the Vatican political empire. Hey, I was brought up in the self-proclaimed English franchise.
Do I think that was political ? Do fish swim ?  )
