Computing - when the Internet goes down...
When gale-winds blow and rain pours down Spain goes off-line. That happened to Southern Spain between December 15th and 27th.
No emails, no blogging, no VoIP, no Skype, no software updates, no DropBox, no Repository to download stuff and some software limping along because peeking at
the home-base was impossible. Yes, OpenOffice worked well, but commercial work and e-banking were out of the question. Cash-registers at several shops didn't function anymore. Some games refused to play as well. As a matter of fact I first didn't really notice that something was very wrong... For some reasons a little bandwidth remained available, leaving me intermittently with some hundreds of Bauds for up- and downloads. It took only a short time before I realized that this was serious business for our Spanish 'Téléfonica'. It is nothing new for them, then Spain is now and then hit by storms that interrupt utilities. Although the Spanish telecom line-owner has a questionable reputation for some, my impression is that they are highly skilled and -although somewhat lethargic in their reactions- do a good job when things really get urgent.

The massive slowdown offered a unique testing ground for network tools, velocimeters and similar gadgets that are widely available on the web. Perhaps this already indicates the existence of structural problems. It's not only Spain, or Europe, where energy and communication infrastructures are questionable. During the ill-fated hours I was able to perform some interesting soundings of the world about Internet packet-switching. To do so I used 4 web browsers (Opera 10.10, Konquerer, FireFox 3.5.6 and Google Chrome 4.0.249.43 Beta).

The CIA base attacked by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan is at the heart of a covert program overseeing strikes by the agency's remote-controlled aircraft along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, officials said Thursday.
The blast Wednesday in eastern Khost province killed seven CIA officers and contractors, including the base chief, a mother of three and a veteran of the agency's clandestine branch. The blast also seriously wounded six agency personnel in what intelligence officials described as a devastating blow to one of the agency's key intelligence hubs for counterterrorism operations.
